Land Rover India has reworked the Discovery line-up for the 2026 model year by consolidating its offerings into two sharp new special-edition trims — Gemini Edition and Tempest Edition — priced respectively at ₹1.26 crore and ₹1.39 crore (ex-showroom).
With this change, the earlier Dynamic S and Metropolitan Variants are being phased out. Below is a breakdown of what the two editions bring (and how they differ) — both in styling, equipment, and performance.
Positioning & Pricing
- The Gemini Edition is positioned as the entry-level (yet still premium) Discovery variant, carrying a starting ex-showroom price of ₹1.26 crore.
- The Tempest Edition sits above it, with a starting price of ₹1.39 crore.
- By offering just these two trims (and discontinuing Dynamic S / Metropolitan), Land Rover is simplifying the range and creating clearer product differentiation between a “luxury plus” (Gemini) and a more extravagantly detailed flagship (Tempest).
Exterior Design & Styling Highlights
Gemini Edition
- Features a gloss-black contrast roof (Narvik Black) and matching black accents.
- Rolls on 21-inch diamond-turned silver alloy wheels.
- Silver-finished skid plates and a silver-accented grille tie in with the overall trim.
- The exterior palette includes six colours, and Gemini is the only edition that offers Sedona Red as a hue.
Tempest Edition
- Takes a more dramatic styling route with Petra Copper contrast roof and accents.
- Offers up to 22-inch dual-tone alloy wheels in a Petra Copper/gloss finish.
- The grille gets a revamp with Graphite Atlas gloss hexagonal detailing.
- Unique touches include a Tempest puddle lamp (projecting a custom graphic) and silver-etched door sill plates.
- Available in three exterior shades: Carpathian Grey, Varesine Blue, and Charente Grey.
By contrast, both editions retain the core Discovery body and proportions; the changes are largely cosmetic and focused on detailing and finishes.
Interior & Feature Upgrades
Common Features (Both Editions)
Both Gemini and Tempest share many baseline features that are part of the updated 2026 Discovery specification:
- 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
- 11.4-inch infotainment touchscreen.
- Meridian audio system, three-zone climate control.
- Powered steering column, 360° surround-view camera.
Gemini-Specific
- Offers upholstery in either leatherette or fabric (combining Light Oyster and Ebony) with matching headliner options.
- The interior is more restrained compared to Tempest; the features are well-equipped but don’t go overboard.
Tempest-Specific
- Adds higher-spec touches such as a heads-up display
- Four-zone climate control, heating, and ventilation for front and middle row seats
- Power-folding third-row seats, a heated multifunction steering wheel
- Uses more premium material combinations: Ebony Windsor leather, dual-tone options including Caraway or Light Oyster, and matching headliners.
These premium upgrades help justify the price premium that the Tempest commands over Gemini.
Powertrain & Performance
- Both editions use the same 3.0-litre inline-six turbocharged diesel engine with mild-hybrid assistance.
- Output is quoted at 345 bhp and 700 Nm of torque.
- The transmission is a 9-speed automatic, sending power to all four wheels (AWD).
- Land Rover claims a 0–100 km/h time of about 6.3 seconds for these editions.
- The top speed is approximately 209 km/h in this configuration.
As nothing has changed mechanically, the performance is in line with the current Discovery D350 models.
Strengths, Challenges & Market Positioning
Strengths/Appeal:
- Distinctive styling touches make both editions stand out in a crowded luxury SUV space.
- Tempest’s premium features may tempt buyers who were considering the Range Rover or rival premium SUVs.
- By reducing the number of trims, Land Rover simplifies the buying process and steers buyers toward a clearer step-up path.
- The lineage of naming (Gemini harking back to the original Discovery’s TDi, Tempest as a bold label) adds a certain story dimension.
Challenges/Caveats:
- The large price tags (₹1.26–1.39 crore ex-showroom) place them at a premium in the Indian market, and buyers will expect impeccable ownership, service support, and resale value.
- Given that much of the update is cosmetic, some buyers may question the value proposition versus a fully loaded standard Discovery or competitor SUVs offering more new features.
- Diesel powertrains are under increasing regulatory scrutiny in some markets, though for now the 3.0-litre mild-hybrid seems a stable proposition for Land Rover’s premium SUVs in India.
Positioning:
- Gemini acts as the “luxury baseline” for the Discovery line, giving buyers an entry into the top-tier SUV segment without going full luxury.
- Tempest is the halo model, intended for buyers who want maximum visual impact, richer materials, and exclusive detailing.
- Together, they reframe the Discovery as more premium, rather than purely utility-oriented, which may help Land Rover better compete with high-end SUVs from German and other premium brands.
