Tata Sierra AWD Confirmed For 2027 – First Tata 4×4 SUV After Hexa

Tata Motors has officially confirmed that an all-wheel-drive Tata Sierra is coming, with the Tata Sierra AWD Confirmed For 2027 – First Tata 4×4 SUV After Hexa as the ICE (petrol/diesel) variant, following the Sierra EV AWD in 2026.

This marks the brand’s first ICE AWD/4×4 passenger vehicle in about seven years, after the Hexa exited in 2020.

Tata Sierra AWD Confirmed

Launch Timeline: EV First, ICE AWD After

Tata’s product roadmap for the Sierra family is now fairly clear:

  • 2025–2026: Sierra ICE (FWD only) launched, with prices starting around ₹11.49 lakh (ex-showroom).
  • Early 2026: Sierra EV hits showrooms, expected in both RWD and AWD configurations.
  • Early 2027: Tata Sierra AWD (ICE) arrives as the range-topping, all-terrain oriented variant.

For buyers, that means you’ll soon be able to choose between everyday FWD Sierras and far more capable AWD versions in both electric and combustion forms.

ARGOS Platform: The Backbone of Sierra AWD

The reason Tata can offer so many versions is its new ARGOS platform (All-terrain Ready, Omni-Energy, and Geometry Scalable Architecture).

  • Supports multiple powertrains – petrol, diesel, CNG, hybrid, and EV.
  • Designed primarily as front-wheel drive, but engineered from day one to support all-wheel drive layouts.
  • Scalable to different body styles and wheelbases, opening the door for a future 7-seater Sierra as well.

Tata’s Chief Product Officer has explicitly confirmed that this platform “can take ICE all-wheel drive,” which is exactly what we’ll see on the Tata Sierra AWD to launch in 2027.

Expected Engines, Power, and Capability

While Tata hasn’t released final AWD specs, we can infer a lot from the current ICE Sierra lineup:

  • 1.5L NA Petrol – 106 bhp (entry engine).
  • 1.5L Turbo-Petrol – 160 bhp (top trims).
  • 1.5L Diesel – 118 bhp.

The AWD ICE Sierra will almost certainly pair AWD with the more powerful turbo-petrol and/or diesel engines, likely with automatic gearboxes for a smoother SUV experience. Expect:

  • Drive modes tuned for mild off-roading (sand, mud, rough roads).
  • Higher ground clearance and more robust suspension settings.
  • Possible off-road styling pack (chunkier tyres, skid plates, roof rails).

On the EV side, the Sierra EV AWD is expected to share hardware with the Harrier EV, which uses 65 kWh (RWD) and 75 kWh (AWD) batteries and targets a range of 550+ km per charge in top variants.

Design & Interior: Same Iconic Look, Tougher Attitude

The AWD version will retain the new Sierra’s retro-modern design—tall bonnet, distinctive window line, and squared wheel arches that pay homage to the original SUV.

Inside, expect the same premium cabin as the top ICE trims:

  • Multi-screen dashboard (instrument cluster + large central infotainment).
  • Four-spoke steering wheel with illuminated Tata logo.
  • Panoramic sunroof, connected-car tech, and ADAS (on higher variants).

The AWD models may add unique upholstery, trim colour, and drive-mode controls to underline their adventure focus.

Positioning: Taking the fight to Creta, Seltos & beyond

The standard Sierra already targets Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Maruti Grand Vitara on price and size. The AWD versions, however, push the Sierra into a niche where very few mid-size SUVs in India currently play—true all-wheel-drive with real touring and light off-road ability.

That Lets Tata:

  • Tap into lifestyle SUV buyers who currently look at bigger or costlier 4x4s.
  • Rebuild its 4×4 legacy from the days of the Safari and Hexa.
  • Offer both green (EV AWD) and go-anywhere (ICE AWD) options in the same nameplate.

Should You Wait For The Tata Sierra AWD in 2027?

If you mainly drive in the city with occasional highway trips, the FWD ICE Sierra or upcoming Sierra EV RWD will likely be more than enough—and they arrive much sooner.

However, if you:

  • Regularly head into the hills, bad roads, or soft trails,
  • Want the extra security of AWD in rain and slush, or
  • Simply love the idea of a modern Indian SUV with true all-terrain credentials,

Then the Tata Sierra AWD Launch in 2027 is absolutely worth keeping on your radar. With the ARGOS platform, powerful engines, and a parallel EV AWD option, it’s shaping up to be one of Tata’s most exciting SUVs of the decade.
